The Next Adventure

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

The Round Ireland Race will start on Sunday June 20th 2010, and is run by Wicklow Sailing Club. A competitive and testing event for any keen sailor, 2010 will be the 30th anniversary of the race. The race itself, beginning and ending at Wicklow Town, is a distance of 704 nautical miles and the rules simply state “leave Ireland and all her islands to starboard”.

The Round Ireland is Ireland’s premier offshore yacht race, and the second longest race in the Royal Ocean Racing Club calendar. The race first took place in 1980 with only thirteen boats. Since then, held every 2 years, the fleet has increased in both size and skill and the Round Ireland is recognised as one of the most challenging ocean races in the sailing calendar.

The majority of boats will be sailed with crews of 8 to 10 persons. Rather than racing fully crewed, Dinah will be sailed by a crew of two. In June 2009 Barry Hurley and Hannah White successfully completed the OSTAR (Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race), competing against each other on different boats. Having raced against each other many times over the years, and finally achieving their mutual goal of completing a solo transatlantic race, they have decided to pool their skills and compete together for the first time. The Round Ireland Race is the first of several very high profile races that Barry and Hannah will take part in, racing double handed against fully crewed boats, as well as against the other competitors in the double handed classes.
